By Terry I. Aino, Nov 18, 2008

The winner of the 2008 World Series of Poker main event has recently signed with a poker personality agency, the Poker Royalty that also represents most of the major online poker players and live pros. Peter Eastgate, the 22 year old from Denmark is the youngest poker player to ever win the WSOP main event in Las Vegas, beating the old, long standing record of Phil Hellmuth, also a member of Poker Royalty. The Confusion of the Small Pair

The Confusion of the Small Pair

A low or middle pair is one of the most frustrating hands to show up as your hole cards. Everyone knows what to do with a pair of Aces or Kings; you play them to the hilt, and bully everyone at the table into giving you money or folding. A pair of fives, sixes, or twos is a little trickier. You don’t want to fold a pair, because your one card away on the flop from a powerful three-of-a-kind, but you don’t want to invest a lot of money into a hand that could turn out to be a catastrophic loser.

2008 WSOP Diary: Main Event Final Table Players Defined

Ivan Demidov

And then there were nine. Yesterday the World Series of Poker field was finally narrowed to the final nine players. This left most people with a strange, unsatisfied feeling as the WSOP ground to a halt for the first time with no Main Event Champion being crowned. It was sort of like getting a hot fudge sundae with the actual fudge. Regardless of anyone's feeling on how the setup has been changed to make ESPN happy, we are still looking forward to eventually seeing the final nine play it out until there is a champion.

Youth Gone Wild

Youth Gone Wild

The 2008 WSOP was dubbed “The Year of the Pro” by a lot of people still clinging to the straws of the past. They gave it this spurious moniker not because the pros won every tournament, but because they were less dominated by the internet kids this year. American dominance in the sport seems to also be on the decline.

Poker Lesson 03: Key Winning Factors

If the only ingredient to winning poker were understanding the hierarchy of cards, the World Series of Poker would include third graders, savants, and the occasional imaginary friend. There is so much more that goes into winning poker then just the cards. The intangible aspects of the game are what separate the amateur from the professional.

Drew Barrymore: Ready to Kick Some Butt

We can't wait to see Drew Barrymore in the 2007 premiere of the poker movie "Lucky You". Barrymore stars in the film based on the 2003 World Series of Poker. Although her role in the film was that of a lounge singer who knows little about poker - Barrymore was apparently bitten by the poker bug.

At Mandalay Bay there is a towering statue of Vladimir Lenin standing in front of Red Square, the casino's vodka-and-caviar lounge-restaurant. The odd thing about the statue though is that the head is missing. The head was originally lost after it was removed by the casino, amid complaints that it honored the king of communism.

Omaha Hi-Lo - Scooping

A common mistake that a number of players make is that they completely ignore the high hands and focus almost exclusively on making the best low. The reason for this is that flop often comes down with an abundance of low value cards that are more of a help when making a low hand. Settling for a split pot is not a very good way to make money. When the flop produces three or more high value cards, creating a decent low becomes almost impossible, so a high hand may very well scoop the pot.

Phil Hellmuth had probably spent the night before the Event #51 final table working out the choreography for the touchdown dance he was going to perform after accepting his 12th bracelet and working on how to get just the right inflection in his voice when taunting the second place finisher. Alas, it was not to be. The day started with twenty players, and the final table did not get started until after the dinner break. Phil started off the final seating number two in the chip count, and he never would overcome the chip leader Tommy Hang.
